Strengthening India-Bhutan Ties: PM Modi's Vision for Shared Prosperity

A New Era of Cooperation

Thimphu, Nov 11: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the deep-rooted relationship between India and Bhutan, highlighting that their connection is built on shared values, emotions, and a commitment to peace and progress. He stated that the prosperity of both nations is intertwined.

During his speech at the Changlimethang Ground in Thimphu, PM Modi revealed plans for India to establish an immigration checkpoint near Gelephu, aimed at enhancing accessibility for visitors and investors.

"Today, I am pleased to announce that India will soon construct an immigration checkpoint near Gelephu to facilitate visitors and investors. The growth and success of India and Bhutan are linked, and reflecting this sentiment, the Indian government pledged Rs 10,000 crore for Bhutan's Five Year Plan last year," PM Modi remarked.

He elaborated that this funding is being utilized across various sectors, including infrastructure, agriculture, finance, and healthcare, thereby improving the quality of life for Bhutanese citizens. India has also implemented measures to ensure a consistent supply of essential goods to Bhutan, and the UPI payment system is expanding to benefit Bhutanese citizens traveling to India.

PM Modi highlighted the spiritual bond between the people of both nations as a significant aspect of their bilateral relationship. He mentioned that India and Bhutan are collaborating on a satellite project, which he described as a notable achievement for both countries.

"We are jointly developing a satellite, marking a significant milestone for India and Bhutan. The spiritual connection between our peoples is a vital strength of our relationship. Recently, the Royal Bhutanese Temple was inaugurated in Rajgir, India, and this initiative is set to expand to other regions. The Bhutanese community has expressed a desire for a temple and guest house in Varanasi, for which the Indian government is providing land. These temples will further solidify our historical and cultural ties. I hope that India and Bhutan continue to advance in peace, prosperity, and mutual progress, blessed by Lord Buddha and Guru Rinpoche," he stated.

Reflecting on his first visit to Bhutan in 2014, PM Modi remarked, "India and Bhutan share not only a border but also a rich cultural heritage. Our relationship is founded on values, emotions, peace, and progress. My first foreign trip as Prime Minister was to Bhutan, underscoring the strength of our ties, which have endured challenges and continue to flourish as we pursue shared growth and prosperity."

He noted that the Global Peace Prayer Festival is taking place alongside the celebration of His Majesty the Fourth King’s 70th birthday, showcasing the strength of India-Bhutan relations through the participation of numerous dignitaries.

PM Modi concluded by stating that the youth of both nations are the primary beneficiaries of their strong partnership, praising His Majesty's efforts in promoting national service, voluntary work, and innovation, which are inspiring Bhutan's young population.
